Saddle Features are:
Saddle Care
A new saddle is like a new pair of boots. Special attention is needed to take the squeak out, make the leather soft and pliable and the saddle comfortable to ride in. Saddles need to be completely dry before oiling. A liquid saddle dressing like Neatsfoot oil is ideal for a new saddle because it soaks into the leather. Oil the fenders more frequently, especially the backs, to protect from sweat, oiling also keeps the fenders pliable. Frequent oiling of the saddle when it is new will help to take the squeak out and will shape it for a comfortable ride.
WASHING
Use warm water and saddle soap with a scrubbing brush on used saddles before oiling, then rinse with clean water. Allow to dry in a well ventilated, shaded area. Don't put the saddle out in the sun to dry as the sun shrinks and hardens the leather. Oil the saddle as a new saddle, making sure the saddle is completely dry before oiling.
STORAGE
Ideally your saddle should be placed in a well ventilated, shaded or roofed area when not in use. If you have to leave your saddle outdoors, shaded areas are best; or cover the saddle. Saddles deteriorate very quickly if left outdoors or in damp areas. Over a period of time the leather shrinks and cracks. Don't leave a saddle in a closed gear bag in humid conditions for any length of time, this can encourage mould.
If the saddle isn't going to be used for a while we recommend that you wash it thoroughly and don't oil it, particularly in humid conditions. Oiled leather attracts mould which can have a disastrous effect on leather.
For medium to long term storage, clean, dry and wipe down saddle and hang it up or set it on a rail or saddle stand in a well ventilated shed, away from exposure to sunlight. Oil the saddle again when ready for use.
Choosing a Saddle
When choosing a saddle, you want it to fit your horse and you as well.
SADDLE TREE TO FIT YOUR HORSE.
Semi Quarter Horse Tree - for heavy set, low withered horses.
Full Quarter Horse Tree - for extreme Quarter Horse styles of horses.
There is a variation in widths and rise of gullets for both styles.
To choose a saddle tree for a particular horse or particular breed of horse, a template of the horses’ withers is a great help. Take a piece of soft fencing wire and run it up the shoulder and over the withers. Trace the shape out on paper.
Photos of your horse from the side and from the rear looking down along the back will assist us in choosing the best tree option.
SADDLE SEAT SIZE
To choose the correct size saddle for you, we measure the saddle size by measuring the bare tree from the back of the pommel to the inside top of the cantle. If you can sit in other saddles and measure the length of the seat and measure the seat jockey area for the proper width for your leg. When measuring the length of the seat, take note of the amount of slope to the cantle (back of seat). This will change the size of seat that you will require for a comfortable fit.
